Testosterone levels generally peak during adolescence and early adulthood. As you age, your testosterone level gradually declines — typically about 1% a year after age 30 or 40. For older men, it is important to determine if the low testosterone is due to normal aging or if there is a medical problem causing the low testosterone level (hypogonadism).

At age 40 and age 55, testosterone levels drop dramatically, signaling the start of andropause (a medical term that is equivalent to menopause for men).

With the onset of andropause, the man begins to feel decreased sexual desire, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, decreased motivation, depression, and changing moods.

What does testosterone do?

Testosterone is fundamental for a man's well-being; low levels of testosterone can produce fatigue, anxiety, depression, irritability, memory loss, and poor sexual performance. Symptoms also include loss of energy, mental clarity, sexual desire, appetite, muscle mass and tonicity, as well as decreased visual capacity, reduced exercise tolerance, poor exercise performance, osteoporosis, and prostate problems.
